Elephant
haiku

Long trunk swaying low
Sun beams on my wrinkled skin
Huge feet stomp the ground

Reflection
The sun rises in front of me
My lettuce-shaped ears flop in front of my face
My image glimmers on the still reflection of the watering hole,
Nature's mirror.

My family of gigantic giants
Surrounding the oasis
A glimmer of hope
For our upcoming migration.

Serpentine Beauty
Lounging lizard,
A serpentine beauty
Basking in the glow
Of the warm sun
On a hot, summer day
His smooth scales
And slithering tail
Suddenly alert
Danger is detected
His cold-blooded body,
Alert on the rock
Heading for safety.

Self-Portrait
after Mary Oliver
Today I am twenty-three and in love with life
And still full of beans.

Onward, to my first classroom!
There are dozens of books; on the other side
their smiles are gleaming and finding their learning
No adversity to the spirit.

Upward, new shoes! There are the roses, and there is the tall oak tree
Standing tall like a soldier, like an new friend
I want to touch

though I'm only twenty-three
and I will never have this day again but ah!
I hope one day I am seventy. And still
in love with life. And still
full of beans.
Teacher
haiku

They call me teacher
But I have so much to learn
It doesn't stop here.
